Adapt User's Guide version 4.5

Text Input

Text Input allows the learner to input a free-form answer in response to an initial question. The author may supply multiple correct answers to accommodate, for example, variations in spelling.

The Text Input component can be used in two distinct ways:

  1. To create a “fill-in-the-blank” sentence style interaction.
  2. To allow the user to supply more than one text response to a question.

The first of these variations can be a bit awkward. Adapt places the text before the input (prefix), the input itself, and the text after the input (suffix) into 3 columns, instead of in one single sentence. This can cause the text of the prefix and suffix to wrap, and be a bit confusing to the learner. You’ll need to experiment to see if this technique will work for your question and audience.

Text Input Settings

The Text Input component inherits all the settings common to the Presentation Components and all the settings common to the Question Components.

This is a list of the inputs in the component. When you click the Add button, a dialog will slide-out from the right side of the screen allowing you to populate the item. The fields in this dialog are:

A list of answers that will be evaluated as correct for this input. Initially, there will be only one text field, but additional answers can be supplied by clicking the Add button.

Text that will appear before the input box.

Text that will appear after the input box.

A short text string that will appear in the text box when no value is present. Can be useful to supply hints to the user.

If selected, the Input items will be appear in random order.

If selected, will ignore the case of the learner’s response. You should typically ensure that this option is checked unless there is a specific reason to ensure the user use correct capitalization.

If checked, the input will ignore the characters ) ( ~ _ - = } { : ; * & ^ % £ $ ! # - / , . ` if the learner types them into the field. You should typically ensure that this option is checked unless one of the responses uses one of these characters in the correct answer.
